I set this blog up several years ago and it has sat here inactive all this time. Since I am home from work today I thought it would be a great time to get started. So as the title says, " What's this all about?". What my intent was when I set this up years ago, was to make a place where I could put my thoughts, feelings and recollections of living in the community of Dawson Creek. Dawson, is a community in the north eastern part of the province of British Columbia, Canada. It has long winters that sometimes begin the latter part of October, and last to the end of April. It sits at the beginning of the Alaska Highway that was built by the United States Army in the 1940's. It is often called the " Mile 0 City" for that reason. The title of the blog reflects that as well. Dawson Creek gets its name from a gentleman Named George Mercer Dawson. A scientist and surveyor from Nova Scotia, that led a surveying team through the area in August of 1879. The U.S. Army had a base here in the 40's, but by and large it was a small farming community. the population of the city had remained static for a number of years. There had been rumors of booms in local resource industries, but nothing ever took root. Other adjacent communities like Fort St. John, and more notably Grande Prairie Alberta saw an increase in size and population over those same years. Recently there has been an explosion in activity in the natural gas industry locally that has caused an increase in population. I moved to this community just after my sixth birthday. My family where emigrants from the U.S. My father was a retiree who had worked for the U.S. government in demolitions and ordnance. My mother was a home maker and 20 years my fathers junior. I have an older brother who is 8 years my senior and three older siblings by my mother from a previous relationship. We ended up in Canada because my Father wanted to move closer to my two half brothers. We moved from Austin Texas, to Burnaby Canada, where we resided for around a year. my two half brothers had previously moved to the Burnaby, Cloverdale area around Vancouver prior to the introduction of the draft in the States during the Viet-Nam War. the move to Dawson Creek was prompted when my father helped one of my half brothers move up to the area after my brother had purchased farmland in the Progress area which is a small farming community southwest of Dawson Creek. my father decided that this was where he wanted to live. A few months later we made the move. No more than a week before my birthday in May we where staying on my brothers farm, looking for housing in Dawson Creek.
OK. That's all for now. I will continue in my next post soon. Any thoughts or questions? Opinions? Please comment.
Cheers
George.
